Our most recent trip took us to Florida's east coast. At the recommendation of some Florida residents, we spent a few days on Hutchison Island. What a great place with some terrific photo opportunities. Our shots received great interest on individual posts so we wanted to share some info about such a beautiful place.
Hutchinson Island is a natural island that's a 23 mile long sanctuary for birds, turtles and other wildlife. It gets it name from being granted to a James Hutchison in 1807. In September of 2004 the island survived 2 hurricanes; Frances with 105 mile an hour winds and and Jeanne with 120 mile an hour winds.
Come springtime, Hutchinson Island is a hatchery for 3 types of turtles; leatherbacks, loggerheads and green sea turtles. Egg laying and hatching happen a night. The beach is a protected area including keeping the lights off as they can disrupt the turtle activities. Turtle nests are identified and marked off by local naturalists. You will see plenty of birds including pelicans, egrets and herons. Located in Stuart and Martin Counties in Florida, the island is in an area known as “The Sailfish Capital of the World.”
For our shoot, we were up early pre-sunrise at the beginning of blue hour right through sunrise. Combining the natural colors with tons of data for photoshop to accentuate, we lucked out with some real likable compositions. Below is a selection.
